White Island: A Hawaii-like Island of the Philippines

Camiguin is located at the northern coast of Mindanao. It is the second-smallest province in the Philippines. It has been a popular destination for tourists, both foreign and local, because of its famous Sunken Cemetery that has been a mark that Catarman, a town in Camiguin, has been pushed below sea-level after the eruption of Mt. Vulcan in the 1800s.

One of the popular tourist spots in Camiguin is the White Island. This island has one of the clearest water I’ve ever seen. While traveling from the jump-off point, I was amazed and can’t stop pointing to Frank the division of the colors of the water, from grayish to clear blue-green. They said all Camiguin beaches have white sand back then. However, after the volcanic eruption, all beaches became rocky and sands were covered with ashes which gave them the grayish color except for one island which they called the white island. The scenery on this island was remarkable. View from the island includes Hibok-hibok volcano and Mt. Vulcan, which gives you the Hawaiian feeling on the island.

There’s nothing much in the island. No infrastructures, no CR! So better do all you need to do at the jump off before heading to the island. There’s only a small sari-sari store there where you can buy chips, coffee, etc. There are also beach tables with an umbrella that can be rented for a minimal cost to give you some shade because there aren’t also any trees. One can’t stay the whole day on the island unless you can stand the heat.

All of us sharing the shade of the umbrella we’ve rented.

Still, one can’t stay in Camiguin and not visit the White Island. It’s a must.
